Czech Nationals and Ski Interkriterium – GBR

Home!

Just returned home from Czech Republic – very tired indeed! I competed in the Czech Nationals and Ski Interkriterium International.

The competition level is high as you are competing with athletes who ski all day every winter or even all year round – it’s good to concentrate on the quality of the skiing, not necessarily the results, but still give it your all!

After the disastrous journey to get from Geneva to Heathrow (flight was cancelled) and resulted in driving overnight in time for my flight out to Prague the following day! We arrived, with only a day of training both disciplines before racing the next day.

First,  the Czech Nationals! The slalom was a disaster, not only was I frustrated that I only completed 10 gates of the course (you don’t get a second run!) but I had been skiing well the week beforehand in training at BSA, Les Houches! The Giant Slalom went slightly better… I completed first run lying in 9th position, yet hip slid second run. I was pleased with my skiing though and took the positives from the races at the end of the week.

Race day followed with a day of mid-week training/rest before the Internationals!

Slalom – Bib number 2. Clean track. Nervous. Excited. My skiing was not as great as it could have been, however I was 17th – 6th 1998! My teammate Anna Henderson was just 0.01s ahead in 16th! Despite having a good result I fell 3 gates from the finish line, and hiked to finish in 3rd last position out of the whole field.

We had a great time at the Prize Giving/ Opening Ceremony on the night of the Slalom, celebrating the victory of teammate Rob Poth who won the overall Slalom title (The first Brit to do so in 15 years AND he got a mention on Ski Sunday!)

Giant Slalom. Bib 128 and finally sunny weather (the first time I had seen the sun that week!) – yet still unbelievably cold. I skied well first run, lying in 19th position only 1.89 secs off the lead and 8th 1998. Second run, wasn’t overly pleased with my skiing yet I  finished in 19th position overall, and finished 6th ’98.
