My name’s Megan Jenkins, I am 16 years old, an athlete and a member of the Great Britain U18 Alpine Ski team.
My current BASS points are:
SL 120.00 Ranked No 1, GS 126.84 Ranked No 2 and SG 133.83 Ranked No 3
I am the current U16 British Overall Champion ( April 2014).
I’ve been skiing since I was 4, first learning to ski in Meribel and in La Plagne in France, and when I was 5 I was able to ski at Norfolk Snowsports Club where I started my passion for competitive racing. At the early age of 6 I progressed to the Norfolk Race team, and started to compete in regional races for Eastern Regional Snowsports Association (ERSA) coming 2nd in my age category in my first race. I won my first ever snow race in the BARSCS Minis race at Meribel in April 2006 and then in 2010 I was old enough to compete in the Children’s Champs at the British Alpine Ski Championships, in which I have competed in every year since. At the age of 10 I was able to compete nationally, in races all around the UK.
I was selected for the British Children’s Team at the British Championships during my first year eligible for team selection, at which I was thrilled – I had finally reached my first goal! I go on camps during the summer and autumn, which are based on glaciers, to concentrate on technique and drills for the upcoming season. I also have to attend fitness camps during the summer months which are hard work but good fun !
I have represented Great Britain in Andorra, Czech Republic, Topolino and Abetone in Italy. These were fantastic experiences mixing with skiers of my own age from other countries, making new friends and enjoying the opening and closing ceremonies of the championships. This January at the Andorra International races I managed to podium twice – 2nd in the Super G and 4th in the Giant Slalom. I was so pleased ! I also managed 8th in the Slalom race too.
Where I train:
I am based for about six weeks of the winter at the British Ski Academy, located in Les Houches, Chamonix. The BSA offers schooling and intense ski training throughout the winter, and is great fun!
